ROBO-SMART Portable Unit for structural bearings – making bridge components intelligent

Principle

The ROBO-SMART Portable Unit for structural bearings is a small, self-powered and integrated acquisition unit. The precise and durable sensors inside the bearing connected to the portable measurement unit transfer the data via USB to any laptop for data presentation via desktop application. Optimally, load cell or movement sensors for structural bearings are being assembled directly in factory or as an upgrade on site. The portable acquisition unit is able to perform measurements at up to two bearings at a time and can be easily connected to other bearings at any given moment.

Applications

Any type of structural bearing from mageba’s wide range can be designed and manufactured with an integrated structural health monitoring system.

The use of a ROBO-SMART Portable Unit monitoring system can enable the life-cycle cost optimisation of a structural bearing, for example by measuring current load distribution for example during extraordinary heavy load transports crossing the bridge or during bridge refurbishments. Moreover, future bearing replacement projects will benefit from measurement of maximum loads and movements, leading to optimised design of the new structural bearing or expansion joint based on actual required load, rotational and movement capacities.
