Migros Fislisbach

Overview
The building which houses the new Migros Shopping Centre in Fislisbach, Switzerland also includes residential apartments above the shopping centre, and therefore had to be designed to fulfil the highest standards in relation to prevention of noise and vibration transmission to the living quarters. mageba played a key role in satisfying these needs, with an attractive solution from the company’s wide range of building products.

mageba offers cost-effective solution

In order to prevent the transmission of noise and vibrations through the building’s floors, high-performance isolation matting was required. mageba’s GREI isolation matting dampens and reduces the transmission of both air-borne and structure-borne noise through floor slabs, and was considered to provide the optimal solution considering price, performance and ease of installation.

A double layer of GREI was supplied for the floors of the shopping centre and storage areas of the building, addressed the primary sources of noise directly at source.

Installation by skilled mageba personnel

Installation requires an understanding of the effectiveness and possible weak points of sound insulation matting. The effectiveness of the installed matting can only be measured after the installation has been completed and the concrete floor screed has been poured on top of the matting, at which time corrections and improvements can no longer be made. Therefore it is imperative that the installation is carried out by suitably trained specialists. For this project, the matting was placed by mageba’s local installation team, with all 1,200m2 placed in just three days.

Protection of the isolation matting during installation

A key part of correct installation is ensuring that the matting is not damaged during installation – for example, through tearing or piercing by reinforcements bars. Any such damage will result in fresh concrete, when poured on top of the matting, passing through the matting and forming a “sound bridge”, which will greatly reduce the effectiveness of the whole solution. In this project, great care was taken to avoid this, for example by placing protective sheets under the wire reinforcement spacers which might otherwise puncture the matting.

Excellent performance independently confirmed

Following installation, measurements by an independent expert of noise transmission through the building confirmed that the stringent requirements of SIA 181/2006 had been not only satisfied but significantly exceeded. Through the use of GREI, the quality of life of the users of this and other buildings has been protected – one of many benefits offered by mageba’s wide range of building products.
